Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training (BASSET) is the State of Illinois' responsible beverage seller/server program. Under the licensing and regulatory auspices of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, BASSET is designed to encourage profitable, responsible, and legal alcohol sales and service.
Why should you take BASSET?

The goals and objectives of the BASSET Program are:
- Train and educate sellers and servers to engage in responsible alcohol service;
- Spot signs of intoxication and utilize various intervention techniques;
- Prevent DUIs and alcohol-related fatalities;
- Stop underage sales and underage drinking;
- Create safer communities and establishments where alcohol is served;
- Educate owners, managers and staff on dram shop insurance, state laws, and local ordinances regarding alcohol service.
As of July 1, 2018, all on-premise alcohol servers (and those required to check identification for alcohol service) are mandated to take BASSET.
BASSET certification/expiration
BASSET certification/expiration is based upon state law, the local municipality where you are doing business and/or the training company you utilized for training. Participants will be issued a certificate from the licensed BASSET provider (BASSET providers submit a roster to the ILCC of participants who have taken their class and passed the examination). The Commission will then issue certification letters (which include the BASSET card) to those participants who successfully completed the course . While it is suggested these cards be carried by the person whose name appears on the card if involved in the selling and/or serving of alcoholic liquor, most of those who are BASSET-certified can also now be found on the BASSET Card Lookup page.
To enroll in a BASSET class
Please click on our Training Class Directory to find licensed BASSET providers in your locale. To get information on BASSET course dates, times and prices, simply call the listed providers. Remember, state law requires all on-premise servers (and those checking ID's for alcohol service) to be BASSET-certified.
BASSET license
For those wishing to teach seller/server training in the state of Illinois, the license is $350 annually. Please read the Rules and Regulations before filling out the application. Please note, you must complete a licensed and recognized instructor training course (PDF) prior to completing the BASSET application. Then, once you completely fill out the application, send required documents and a check or money order payable to the Illinois Liquor Control Commission. The applicant can submit a curriculum affidavit that the ILCC supplies to the instructor training companies.
BASSET class rosters
All licensed BASSET providers must email their class rosters to LCC.Basset@illinois.gov with an attachment in the required spreadsheet format (please send a message to the above email address to request the Excel spreadsheet template).
